The Teddy Bear is the classic infant toy. Pink and blue teddy bears are often attached to baby shower presents. This soft, cuddly toy is a constant companion who provides comfort and tactile stimulation for a young child. It is not surprising that the teddy bear is the most popular plush toy both to give and to receive.
Here are three things to consider when buying a teddy bear for the newborn in your life.
1. Color
Newborns cannot see as well as an older child or adult. Until about six months of age he will respond best to bold, contrasting colors. The visual extremes of black, white and red will captivate and hold his attention. We suggest Panda since it is black and white in color.
2. Faces and Body Parts
Toys that can be held and manipulated encourage hand and eye coordination. The teddy bear and panda, unlike dogs and horses, have faces and body parts all up front so all features can be seen at once.
3. Safety
The most important factor in choosing a teddy bear is safety. Examine the bear to be sure there are no parts that can come off easily and pose a chocking hazard. Embroidered eyes, nose, and mouth are a better choice.
Playing with Teddy
There are countless ways a newborn or very young child can play with teddy bears. Just touching and stroking the soft, fuzzy “fur” is delightful and stimulating. Babies like faces. Point out each feature such as eyes, nose, ears, hands and feet. At the same time let the baby touch each part.
The possibilities of pretend play are endless with teddy bears. This soft, cuddly friend is a constant companion at dress-up tea parties, or protector from scary things in the night.
Teddy can also be a teaching aid perhaps to illustrate medical procedures, dental visits, or good manners.
It is no wonder that the Teddy Bear is the most popular and versatile plush toy. Other toys have come and gone but the teddy bear is over 100 years old and has stood the test of time. It is obvious that this is an infant toy worth purchasing.
