In order to be a permanent resident in the United States an alien must carry what is referred to as a green card. This is the color of the original card back in the 40′s (12). The card has gone through some color changes, today’s cards are pink, but they still signify ones right as a permanent resident of the United States of America.
Ways to Become a Resident
There are many ways to become a permanent resident. Some of them include having a U.S. citizen relative, having a United States job offer, or planning to marry someone in the U.S. These factors are pleasing to the United States government because they show financial stability and that you most likely will not need public assistance.
Relative Based Green Cards
If your relative is a United States citizen this will definitely will help you in your quest for a green card. For the relation to be considered a relative you must be “the spouse, child, brother sister or are engaged to be married to a U.S. citizen” (12). Also, you may be married to or the unwed son or daughter of a green card holder. The only issue with this is there is quite a long wait (12). The United States had to define what constituted as a relative because your third cousin twice removed would allow many to obtain green cards creating an even longer line. For a green card holder you must be the sibling, parent, or planning to marry the green card holder. United States citizens can have more distant relatives such as aunts and cousins (13).
Job Based Green Cards
In order to get a green card based on employment you must already have a job offer from a United States employer. There are two kinds of categories of employment that will earn one. The first and most sought after is priority workers “people with extraordinary ability…outstanding professors and researchers, and multi-national executives and managers” (13).
Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery
To entice those from countries that have had a low number of immigrants in the past the United States the Immigration Act of 1990. To enter you must be from one of the countries on the list and have your “high school diploma or two years work experience (U.S. Immigration 231).” Once you are selected out of the lottery this means that you may start to apply for a green card and it may take some time so it is best to start the process right away.
Limitations of Green Card Holders
United States citizens have more rights and leisure to go where they please for as long as they want. A permanent resident or green card holder has the right to work and travel in and out of the country, but there are some limitations. Since you are a permanent residence you must make the United States your home living somewhere else for two years will throw up red flags to immigration authorities. They will want a legitimate excuse for doing so such as a death in the family (301). Also, every time you move report your new address to the UCIS. Another threat to your permanent resident status is committing a serious crime. Not reporting your new address and committing a crime may be grounds for removal (301). By maintaining your residence in the United States, reporting changes and address to the authorities and being a law abiding citizen your green card status will remain secure.
